Jake (#2 at Fusion) is a native of Norfolk, NE and graduated from the University of Nebraska – Omaha in 2007 with a degree in speech communications. Jake chose to work for Fusion because of our family like atmosphere and the ability he has to impact lives for the better.

Jake has spent his first couple weeks marketing for candidates while trying to build his own client list. Jake is excited to build relationships with his therapists and assist them in taking their careers to the next level. He is working hard to make placements, so if you’re interested in working with him, give him a shout. He’s great, we promise!

Jake is the youngest of 4 boys and a dog named Dudley. Between Jake and his wife, Jessica, they have 14 nieces and nephews in addition to their new little guy, Brody, who is just 9 weeks old. Jake is a self-proclaimed Husker football fanatic. He also loves to play golf, basketball, and spend time with his family in his spare time.

We believe that Jake’s competitive nature will be a driving force for him to get his therapists the best job possible. Jake’s parents have owned a steak house for 35 years that they built from the ground up. This has instilled in him the “whatever it takes to help your customer, you do it” mentality which he plans to bring to his career at Fusion.

Contact Jake if you’re interested in a therapy position with Fusion Medical.

It’s that time of year again. People everywhere are vowing to hit the gym, eat better, make more friends, and overall make a new beginning in the new year. Some have already fallen off the wagon and even more will in the months to come.

Healthcare professionals may have a different set of goals for the new year. Professional development, especially among new grads, may be a high priority on the resolution list. Professional development will help you land a great job and benefit you in the long run. It is definitely an ongoing process, but there is no better time to start than the present. There is no better way to achieve your resolution of traveling more than taking a job in an unfamiliar city. Whether your goal may be personal, professional, or just for fun, sticking to it is always the challenge. Here are some tips on keeping your resolution no matter what it may be.

Be realistic. Don’t even try to set outlandish goals that you know you can’t and won’t achieve. It’s unlikely that you’ll lose 100 lbs by summer, read 50 books, and become an expert chef at the same time. This also goes for setting too many new year’s resolutions. You should probably limit yourself to 3 realistic goals that you can and want to achieve with a little hard work.

Focus on what you will do and not what you won’t. It is hard to stop a bad habit cold turkey, but if you have a plan to replace it for a good habit, you may see much more success. If you always used to go smoke on your lunch break, replace it with taking a walk around the block for exercise instead.

Make a plan. Rather than setting a huge, daunting goal, set a series of smaller goals to achieve your larger goal. Go ahead and reward yourself for reaching those smaller goals. This may help keep you motivated!

Enlist additional help or support. Find a resolution buddy to hold you accountable. You will find yourself trying harder and staying more disciplined with someone watching over you. You can return the favor for them or make it a fun competition if you’d like. If you’re on the road and away from friends and family, consider using Skype or talking to your new co-workers. This may also help start up conversations!

Be specific. You will find it much easier to cheat on your resolution if you set vague goals. If you want to lose weight, set a number for your goal weight. If you don’t, you may find yourself giving up on your goal before you’ve achieved what you wanted.

Keep tabs on your progress. Periodically along the way, make sure you are where you want to be. If you find yourself falling behind in your goal, set new action steps to get back on track.

Good luck and have a happy and prosperous 2013!

Depending on the setting of your assignment, you may even be exposed to more than the flu virus.

Simple everyday items like your keyboard, doorknob, or microwave carry more germs than the average toilet seat. Disgusting, I know, but there are simple measures to prevent you from getting sick this flu season.

Get the flu shot now. Or get it as soon as you can. It takes about two weeks for the antibodies of the vaccination to develop protection, so don’t wait until the outbreak hits. The shot contains an inactive virus which cannot cause illness. This is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. The nasal spray form of the vaccination, however, does contain a weakened form of the virus and may be available for people between the ages of 2 and 49. The flu shot will last you the entire flu season, but does not last from year to year, so make sure to make the vaccination an annual occurance.

Wash up. As a healthcare professional you probably wash your hands more frequently than most, but this can be one of the most important ways to prevent illness. By increasing the frequency and time spent washing your hands, you can dramatically decrease you chance of illness. Hands should be scrubbed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds per wash. This is about the time it will take you to sing happy birthday twice in your head (or aloud if you please!)

Keep hands away from you nose, mouth, and eyes. This seems like common sense, but the average person touches their face 3-4,000 times a day. By making a conscious effort to stop this, you can decrease the number of germs that enter your body this way.

Keep sanatizer handy. You never know when you’re going to have someone sneeze or cough near you and you aren’t near a restroom to go wash your hands. Hand sanatizer won’t get dirt off your hands, but the alcohol will kill germs.

Clean up. Make sure to keep commonly touched areas clean. Keyboards and telephones are among the dirtiest places and you use them almost every day. If you are a therapist, make sure to keep all your equipment and instruments clean after each patient.

Avoid contact with people who are sick. Do not shake hands or work closely around those who are sick. This may be difficult if your co-workers come to work sick, but at least avoid touching their things and do your best to stay away.

Take good care of yourself. Make sure to get plenty of rest, eat a well balanced diet, get routine exercise, and manage your stress well to keep your immune system high.

Cover your cough. If you have to cough or sneeze, make sure to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue so you don’t spread your germs to those around you. Disinfect your hand afterwards.

If you’re sick, stay home. Don’t risk infecting your co-workers or patients with you illness. Make sure you are feeling better and no longer contagious before returning to work.

Hopefully, by taking these measures, you can prevent getting sick at all this winter.

This is why it is very important for PT’s to keep up on the latest treatments through continued education courses. Physical therapy encompasses a wide variety of disciplines, but many CEU classes are designed to focus specifically on one or two of those disciplines.

Many states require licensed physical therapists to complete a certain number of continued education hours to keep up their license current in that state. These classes vary in their requirements. As a PT, you will be licensed in a state (or several) and can check with their department of professional regulation to see what those requirements are.

There are many classes, seminars, and conferences that you can attend to easily complete these hours. Classes are offered both online and in person. Many of the online courses are geared more towards the non-physical therapy portion of the profession such as profession ethics, fraud, and abuse. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) can be very helpful with determining which CEU is right for you.

We found some resources to help you find the right CEU class for you.
