Travel Labor Delivery RN Jobs

Most travel agencies require a minimum of 2 years of dedicated L&D bedside experience. Strong fetal monitoring interpretation skills and comfort managing both low-risk and high-risk obstetric patients are essential. Experience with cesarean section circulating and labor augmentation strengthens your candidacy. Your recruiter will discuss your specific background and help identify assignments that match your experience level.

RNC-OB is highly preferred but not always required. This certification from the National Certification Corporation demonstrates your obstetric nursing expertise and fetal monitoring competency. If you don't have it yet, many travel L&D nurses pursue it to strengthen their placement options and competitive positioning. Your recruiter can discuss which assignments prefer or require RNC-OB and help you plan certification timing.

Travel L&D RNs need an active RN license, current BLS certification, and NRP certification. ACLS certification is required by most facilities for labor and delivery assignments. These certifications are essential because L&D nurses manage both maternal and fetal emergencies, requiring immediate response capabilities for complications during labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Your recruiter will verify all certifications during the credentialing process and notify you if any renewals are needed before your assignment start date. Maintaining current certifications ensures you're prepared to handle critical situations from the first day of your assignment.

Travel L&D nursing assignments typically include housing assistance or stipends as part of the contract. Most staffing agencies coordinate credentialing, licensing, and housing logistics before your assignment begins, allowing you to focus on clinical work. Standard arrangements include vetting each assignment for delivery volume, nurse-to-patient ratios, and available OB support. If logistics change during your assignment, your recruiter works to advocate for adjustments and identify solutions, ensuring continuity of your placement and support throughout your contract term.

Travel L&D RN pay varies by location, facility delivery volume, and regional demand. Compensation packages typically include competitive weekly pay, call pay differentials, housing stipends, and day-one health insurance benefits. High-volume facilities and areas with critical staffing shortages often offer enhanced rates. Your recruiter will discuss full compensation details transparently, including base pay, shift differentials, and any available bonuses. Travel L&D positions reflect the specialized obstetric expertise and high-stakes nature of labor and delivery nursing, with packages designed to support your travel lifestyle while recognizing your clinical skills.

Start by connecting with your recruiter, who will learn about your L&D experience, preferred locations, and ideal assignment characteristics. They'll verify your licenses and certifications, then present assignments that align with your goals. Your recruiter stays with you throughout your entire travel nursing journey, answering questions and advocating for you every step of the way. There's no pressure or timeline, just support when you're ready.

Consider delivery volume, nurse-to-patient ratios, OB physician presence, and anesthesia availability. Safe ratios (ideally 1:1 in active labor) protect both you and your patients. Ask about the case mix, on-call requirements, and neonatology coverage. Your recruiter will help you evaluate each assignment against these factors so you choose a placement that feels right for your career stage and wellbeing.

Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of travel nursing is the built-in breaks between 13-week assignments. After an intense L&D rotation, taking time to rest and recharge protects your emotional and physical health. Your recruiter supports your timeline and helps you plan your next assignment when you're ready, with no pressure to commit immediately.
