Question 1

How much experience do I need for travel Sterile Processor jobs?

Accepted Answer

Most travel Sterile Processor positions require at least one year of recent experience. Facilities typically prefer candidates with exposure to different patient populations and healthcare settings. Requirements vary by location and facility type, with some assignments accepting less experience for entry-level roles. Your recruiter can help identify assignments that match your current experience level and career goals. Travelers with broader facility experience—such as working in both hospital and ambulatory surgery centers—often have more assignment options available. Building diverse skills in instrument processing, sterilization techniques, and quality control procedures makes you more competitive for travel positions nationwide.

Question 2

What certifications do I need for travel Sterile Processor positions?

Accepted Answer

Travel Sterile Processor positions commonly require CRCST certification from HSPA or CSPDT certification from CBSPD. Current BLS certification is also typically required. CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) from HSPA and CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) from CBSPD are both widely accepted industry-standard credentials for sterile processing professionals. Some facilities may accept one certification over the other, while others recognize both equally. Additional certifications like CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) or CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor) may be preferred for specialized roles. Specific requirements vary by facility and assignment location, so your recruiter can review the exact credentials needed for each opportunity and help ensure you meet all qualifications before applying.

Question 3

How long are travel Sterile Processor assignments?

Accepted Answer

Travel Sterile Processor assignments typically run 13 weeks. This standard contract length is common across travel healthcare positions. Extensions beyond the initial 13 weeks are frequently available when both the healthcare facility and the traveler wish to continue the assignment, and some facilities may offer shorter contract durations based on their specific staffing needs. Your recruiter can help identify assignments that align with your preferred timeline and discuss extension opportunities as your contract end date approaches, giving you flexibility to either extend at your current location or explore new opportunities in different facilities.
