Overview
Maine is an NLC member with automatic multistate privilege for nurses licensed in other compact states. Declare Maine as your primary state of residence to practice immediately on compact privilege while your single-state Maine license processes (2-4 weeks). If you maintain residency in your home NLC state, you cannot claim Maine compact privilege and must obtain a Maine single-state license instead.
For travelers, this means you can begin a Maine assignment immediately if your home state is also a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish Maine residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for a Maine license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
Maine uses an online portal endorsement process for registered nurses already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $100 application fee.
