Overview
New Jersey is an NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact) member; you can practice immediately under multistate compact privilege if you hold an active multistate license from another NLC state and do NOT establish New Jersey as your primary state of residence. However, if you become a New Jersey resident (establish lease, obtain NJ driver's license, register to vote), your compact privilege expires and you must apply for a New Jersey state license within 30 days or cease practice.
For travelers, this means you can begin a New Jersey assignment immediately if your home state is also a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish New Jersey residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for a New Jersey license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
New Jersey uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for registered nurses already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $195 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via Nursys or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through Nursys or direct board verification. New Jersey requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a registered nurse license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the New Jersey Board of Nursing website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $195 |
| Renewal | $120 (every 2 years) |
| Fingerprinting | $25-75 (fingerprinting) |
| Nursys verification | $30 |
| Estimated First-Time Cost | $250–$300 |
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
New Jersey does not issue temporary nursing licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
New Jersey registered nurse endorsement applications typically take 8-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 6-7 weeks if primary state verification completes within 1 week and no additional documentation is required.
Common sources of delay:
- Primary state verification delays: New Jersey relies on Nursys or direct board verification from your current state; if your home state board is slow to respond, NJ processing extends well beyond 12 weeks
- Mail-only application submission: All endorsement applications must be submitted by mail or PDF; no online portal expedites the initial application step, adding 3-5 days minimum for postal delivery and intake
- Board processing timeline not published: NJ does not disclose specific monthly meeting dates or cutoff schedules; applications submitted late in a processing cycle may wait 4-6 weeks for the next review batch
- Criminal history review delays: Self-reported criminal history triggers additional board review time; any disclosed conviction or arrest significantly extends processing beyond 12 weeks
New Jersey does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
New Jersey requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for registered nurse license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: opioid prescribing and pain management — 1 hour, organ and tissue donation — 1 hour
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — New Jersey may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring May 31 of even years — $120 via New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs portal
- CE topics: opioid prescribing and pain management — 1 hour and organ and tissue donation — 1 hour
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: License becomes expired, and must pay late fee and reinstate
- Traveler tip: Track your New Jersey license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
