Overview
New York is not an NLC member. RNs must obtain a state-issued NY license through endorsement; compact licenses from other states have no privilege in NY and do not reduce processing time.
Endorsement Process
New York uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for registered nurses already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $143 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via Nursys or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through Nursys or direct board verification. New York requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a registered nurse license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the New York State Education Department - Office of the Professions. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the New York State Education Department - Office of the Professions website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $143 |
| Renewal | $73 (every 3 years) |
| Fingerprinting | $25-75 (fingerprinting) |
| Nursys verification | $30 |
| Estimated First-Time Cost | $198–$248 |
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
New York does not issue temporary nursing licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
New York registered nurse endorsement applications typically take 4-8 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3.5 weeks (if mandated training completed pre-submission, primary state verification submitted immediately and responds within 5 business days, and application lands before board review cutoff).
Common sources of delay:
- Mandated training completion (Child Abuse Identification + Infection Control courses) must precede application submission and adds 1-2 weeks; NYSED will not issue license until certificates are provided
- Verification from primary state board is serial and depends on responsiveness of source state — manual verification systems can add 2-4 weeks beyond the 4-8 week baseline
- Application submission by mail and PDF processing means no same-day intake; board review cycles are sequential, not concurrent, creating natural 1-2 week batching delays
New York does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
New York requires 4 contact hours of continuing education every 3 years for registered nurse license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: infection control — 4 hours (every 4 years), child abuse identification and reporting — 2 hours (one-time)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — New York may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 3 years — $73 via NYSED Office of the Professions portal
- Renewal timing: Last day of birth month (triennial cycle).
- CE topics: infection control — 4 hours (every 4 years) and child abuse identification and reporting — 2 hours (one-time)
- Renewal window: Opens 4 months before expiration
- Late penalty: License becomes expired, and must pay late fee and complete registration
- Traveler tip: Track your New York license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
