Overview
California is NOT an OT Compact member. Travel OTs must obtain a California-specific endorsement license via the state board; no multistate reciprocity available. The 60-day temporary grace period for applicants with unencumbered out-of-state licenses is the only expedited pathway.
Endorsement Process
California uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $270 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via California board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. California requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the California Board of Occupational Therapy. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: California requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering California-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the California Board of Occupational Therapy website for status updates on your application.

Occupational Therapy Assistants: renewal is $210 (figures above are for occupational therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
California issues temporary occupational therapy licenses valid for 60 calendar days from the date the application is received by the Board (per BPC 2570.4), allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Hold an unencumbered, active occupational therapist license from another US state
- Have completed NBCOT certification (NBCOT exam pass required; Limited Licenses with supervisory requirements do not qualify)
- Submit complete endorsement application to California board before grace period begins
Issuance timeline:
- Complete endorsement application received and verified by California Board of Occupational Therapy
- Proof of current, unencumbered license from home state provided
- Background check initiated (not necessarily completed; grace period begins upon application date per BPC Section 2570.4)
Denial risks:
- Prior disciplinary action or license revocation in any state
- Encumbered license (restrictions, probation, or conditions) in current/home state
- Failure to provide proof of NBCOT certification or national exam passage
Important for travelers: Grace period terminates immediately if endorsement application is denied or withdrawn. License becomes invalid upon expiration of 60-day grace period if permanent California license has not been issued (applicant cannot continue working). Any violation of California practice standards during grace period can trigger immediate revocation and harm permanent application review.
Processing Time
California occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-6 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3 weeks.
Common sources of delay:
- Board meets quarterly; applications submitted between meeting dates experience 4-6 week hold before review begins
- Fingerprinting and background check verification can take 2-3 weeks if applicant has any record complexity or delays with DOJ turnaround
- Out-of-state license verification via NBCOT or direct board contact may delay if verifying board is slow or requires certified documents
California does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
California requires 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — California may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $270 via California Board of Occupational Therapy portal
- Renewal timing: Expiring on the last day of applicant's birth month.
- Traveler tip: Track your California license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
