Overview
Florida does not participate in the OT Compact. Occupational therapists must obtain a Florida-specific license via endorsement (preferred, 1-4 weeks) or NBCOT exam (60-90 days). Temporary permits available pending permanent licensure.
Endorsement Process
Florida uses an online via flhealthsource.gov / mqa services portal under the mobile act endorsement pathway (section 456.0145, f.s.) endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $180 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Florida board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Florida requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
A livescan electronic fingerprint background screening via FDLE/FBI (Florida Health background screening), required for licensure. is required as part of the endorsement process. Submit your fingerprinting authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Florida requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Florida-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Florida issues temporary occupational therapy licenses, allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Substantially equivalent educational background to Florida's requirements (typically verified through NBCOT certificate)
- Complete endorsement application submitted to Florida Board
- Demonstrated current licensure in good standing in another U.S. state or territory
Issuance timeline:
- Board determination that applicant is qualified for licensure by endorsement
- Application completeness confirmed by board staff (all supporting documents received)
- No disqualifying background issues identified during preliminary screening
Denial risks:
- Criminal history or disciplinary record that fails Florida's fitness review
- Educational credentials not deemed substantially equivalent to Florida standards
- Application submitted with insufficient supporting documentation
Important for travelers: Temp permit automatically terminates upon issuance of permanent license or final board decision to deny. Temp permit is non-renewable; applicant who does not obtain permanent license within permit validity window must reapply. Practicing outside scope or violating board regulations during temp permit period grounds for immediate revocation and potential disciplinary action.
Processing Time
Florida occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take Endorsement (MOBILE Act): license issued within 7 days once all requirements are met (s. 456.0145(2)(e), F.S.). Initial/exam applications: reviewed within 30 days (s. 456.013). to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10 days (complete application submitted before board meeting cutoff, all verifications obtained simultaneously, temp license issued immediately).
Common sources of delay:
- Board meets quarterly; applications submitted between meeting dates wait 4-12 weeks for formal review
- Verification from original state via NBCOT or direct board contact adds 2-3 weeks; delays if prior state is unresponsive
- Incomplete applications (missing jurisprudence exam completion, background check documentation, or CE transcripts) cause 1-2 week rejection-resubmission cycles
Florida does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Florida requires 26 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Florida may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $60 via Florida Board of Occupational Therapy portal
- Renewal timing: Prior to February 28th of odd-numbered years.
- Traveler tip: Track your Florida license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
