Overview
Idaho is NOT a member of the OT Compact. All travel occupational therapists must obtain an Idaho-specific endorsement license. The endorsement path typically takes 1-2 weeks with a temporary license option available to begin work during processing.
Endorsement Process
Idaho uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $80 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Idaho board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through License verification from the other jurisdiction (endorsement requires being currently licensed and in good standing in another jurisdiction and meeting that jurisdiction's endorsement requirements). The board page does not name NBCOT as the verification mechanism.. Idaho requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Idaho Occupational Therapy Licensure Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Idaho requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Idaho-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Idaho Occupational Therapy Licensure Board website for status updates on your application.

Occupational Therapy Assistants: renewal is $30 (figures above are for occupational therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Idaho issues temporary occupational therapy licenses, allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Submit complete endorsement application to Idaho Occupational Therapy Licensure Board
- Provide proof of valid NBCOT certification
- Have current valid occupational therapy license in another U.S. state
- Pay temporary license fee ($25)
Issuance timeline:
- Temporary license application received and deemed substantially complete by board staff
- No disqualifying background check flags identified during initial review
- Primary endorsement application submitted concurrently or within 10 days of temp license request
Denial risks:
- Applicant lacks current valid license in any U.S. state at time of temp license application
- NBCOT certification is expired, suspended, or revoked
- Background check reveals disqualifying criminal history or professional discipline
- False or misleading information provided on temp license application
Important for travelers: Temporary license automatically expires upon permanent license denial or after 6 months, whichever comes first. If applicant violates Idaho practice laws or scope of practice during temp license period, board may revoke immediately and deny permanent endorsement. Disciplinary action during temporary license period can result in revocation and permanent license denial.
Processing Time
Idaho occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 1-2 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as approximately 3-5 business days once the application is complete (standard, no expedite implied).
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications on rolling basis but applications are queued; peak submission periods (e.g., spring/summer) can extend processing from 1-2 weeks to 3-4 weeks
- Verification from current state license holder's board can add 1-2 weeks if out-of-state board is slow to respond to NBCOT or direct verification requests
- Missing or incomplete background check documentation triggers re-submission cycle, adding 2-3 weeks to processing timeline
Idaho does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Idaho requires 10 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Idaho may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $40 via Idaho Occupational Therapy Licensure Board portal
- Renewal timing: Transitioning to biennial licensure as of October 14, 2025 (formerly annual).
- Traveler tip: Track your Idaho license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
