Overview
Maine has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Maine begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Maine-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Endorsement Process
Maine uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $35 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Maine board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Maine requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Maine Board of Occupational Therapy Practice. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Maine requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Maine-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Maine Board of Occupational Therapy Practice website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $35 |
| Renewal | $35 |
Occupational Therapy Assistants: renewal is $30 (figures above are for occupational therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Maine does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Maine occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 3-5 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10 business days (compact privilege activation only; endorsement for non-compact holders requires 3-5 weeks minimum).
Common sources of delay:
- Board portal submission doesn't guarantee immediate processing—applications enter queue and are reviewed on established schedule; no published SLA for endorsement review
- License verification from source state can take 2-4 weeks if using direct board-to-board channels rather than NBCOT; delays compound if source state is similarly slow
- Incomplete applications (missing CE documentation, unclear license history, or ambiguous jurisdiction claims) trigger rejection and restart; resubmission adds 3-7 days per cycle
Maine does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Maine requires 10 contact hours of continuing education for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Occupational Therapy Assistants: 6 contact hours (vs 10 for occupational therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Maine may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Confirm with the Maine Board of Occupational Therapy Practice — $35 via Maine Board of Occupational Therapy Practice portal
- Renewal timing: Every year prior to March 31st.
- Traveler tip: Track your Maine license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
