Overview
Mississippi has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Mississippi begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Mississippi-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Mississippi has ENACTED the OT Compact (HB 259, 2023) but is NOT YET accepting OT Compact privilege applications. Per the OT Compact Commission, Mississippi's status is 'Not Yet' for accepting OTC applications, so travelers CANNOT practice in Mississippi under a compact privilege today. Until MS goes live, every out-of-state OT/OTA must obtain a Mississippi license by endorsement/universal license.
Endorsement Process
Mississippi uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $250 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Mississippi board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Mississippi requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) - Professional Licensure Division (statutory licensing authority is the Mississippi State Board of Health, advised by the Mississippi Advisory Council in Occupational Therapy). Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Mississippi requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Mississippi-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) - Professional Licensure Division (statutory licensing authority is the Mississippi State Board of Health, advised by the Mississippi Advisory Council in Occupational Therapy) website for status updates on your application.

Temporary License
Mississippi issues temporary occupational therapy licenses valid for Two distinct mechanisms: (1) Limited Permit - up to 90 days, renewable once, for applicants awaiting exam results (Rule 8.4.5); (2) Universal-license Temporary Practice Permit - valid until license granted/denied, expiring 365 days after issuance (Rule 8.4.7(7)(a)). The research's 365-day figure applies only to the universal-license temporary permit., allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Submitted complete endorsement application to Mississippi board
- Submitted affidavit under penalties of perjury confirming applicant eligibility
- No pending criminal charges or disciplinary action in any state
Issuance timeline:
- Complete application received AND affidavit under penalties of perjury submitted
- Temporary license issued within 30 days of application receipt if all eligibility requirements met
Denial risks:
- Pending criminal investigation or active disciplinary case in source state
- Application incomplete after 30-day grace period (temporary license not issued if application unfinished)
- False statements in affidavit or application
Important for travelers: Temporary license revoked immediately if permanent license denied by board. Temporary license expires automatically when permanent license issued (do not assume renewal rights). Revoked if applicant fails to complete permanent endorsement within 365 days (temp license max duration). Revoked if background check uncovers disqualifying information after temp license issued.
Processing Time
Mississippi occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take Board guidance: allow 7 to 14 business days after receipt of all paperwork. Statutory universal-license outer bound: issue or deny within 120 days; temporary practice permit issued within 30 days if processing exceeds 2 weeks. to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 4 weeks (temporary license only; permanent license takes minimum 6-8 weeks even with perfect application).
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications in batches; applications submitted after monthly cutoff wait until next review cycle (typically 4-6 weeks)
- Jurisprudence exam required for all endorsements—if not passed on first attempt, adds 2-4 weeks minimum before resubmission
- NBCOT verification from source state can take 2-3 weeks; delays here cascade directly into board review timeline
- Background check completion is state-specific and can add 1-2 weeks if applicant has any discrepancies requiring clarification
Mississippi does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
