Overview
Nebraska has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Nebraska begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Nebraska-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Nebraska has ENACTED the OT Compact (LB752, signed 2022) but is NOT yet issuing or accepting OT Compact privilege applications. Per the official OT Compact Commission, Nebraska is listed as 'Not Yet' for accepting OTC applications. Travelers CANNOT currently practice in Nebraska on a compact privilege; a standard Nebraska license (by endorsement) is still required. When Nebraska does open, the compact privilege fee is expected to be $45 plus a $75 OT Compact fee.
Endorsement Process
Nebraska uses a paper application: forms may be completed online but must be printed, physically signed, and mailed to the licensure unit (po box 94986, lincoln ne 68509-4986). there is no online submission portal. endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $120 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Nebraska board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Nebraska requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Nebraska DHHS, Division of Public Health, Licensure Unit — Office of Rehabilitation & Community Services (OT contact unit). Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Nebraska requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Nebraska-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Nebraska DHHS, Division of Public Health, Licensure Unit — Office of Rehabilitation & Community Services (OT contact unit) website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Nebraska does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Nebraska occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 3-6 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 2.5 weeks.
Common sources of delay:
- Board application cutoffs: applications submitted outside normal windows may wait for next board review cycle
- Verification routing delays: NBCOT verification requests can take 1-2 weeks if not submitted concurrently with endorsement application
- Missing CE documentation: many applicants fail to provide current continuing education verification, triggering additional requests that add 5-7 business days
Nebraska does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Nebraska requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Occupational Therapy Assistants: 15 contact hours every 2 years (vs 20 for occupational therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Nebraska may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $120 via Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services portal
- Renewal timing: Licenses expire August 1 of each even-numbered year (biennial). CE period runs August 1 of one even-numbered year through August 1 of the next even-numbered year.
- Traveler tip: Track your Nebraska license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
