Overview
New Hampshire has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until New Hampshire begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a New Hampshire-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
New Hampshire has ENACTED the OT Licensure Compact (RSA 326-C:9, member since 2021) but is NOT yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. As of May 2026 only Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia have completed integration and are issuing privileges. Travelers CANNOT practice in NH under a compact privilege today; they must obtain a NH license via reciprocity/endorsement (a temporary 120-day license is available while the full application is processed).
Endorsement Process
New Hampshire uses an online portal (universal application for licensure + reciprocity/endorsement addendum). reinstatement of a license expired <1 year is by paper application mailed to oplc; >1 year reapply online. nbcot verification is uploaded; there is no jurisprudence exam. endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $121.00 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via New Hampshire board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. New Hampshire requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: New Hampshire requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering New Hampshire-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
New Hampshire issues temporary occupational therapy licenses, allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Hold active occupational therapist license in good standing from another US state or OT Compact member
- Complete endorsement application submitted to New Hampshire board
- No pending disciplinary action or criminal convictions that would bar licensure
Issuance timeline:
- Complete endorsement application received via portal with all required documentation attached
- Initial background check screen cleared (no automatic disqualifiers flagged)
- Board staff confirms application is administratively complete
Denial risks:
- Criminal conviction related to dishonesty, drug use, or harm to patients
- Active disciplinary action or license suspension/revocation in current or prior state
- False or misrepresented information on endorsement application
Important for travelers: Temporary license valid only 120 days or until permanent license issued/denied; if permanent application is denied, temp license is immediately revoked. Working outside scope of practice or violating professional conduct rules while on temporary license can trigger immediate revocation and impact permanent license decision. Failure to disclose material information discovered after temp issuance can result in revocation and application denial.
Processing Time
New Hampshire occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-12 weeks (temporary license as quickly as 1-2 business days) to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10-14 days if temporary license issued immediately and background check is expedited.
Common sources of delay:
- Board application portal submissions are queued and reviewed on a rolling basis; if submitted near month-end, expect 2-3 week delay before initial review
- Verification requests routed through NBCOT can take 2-3 weeks; some boards are slower than others, extending full endorsement timeline to 12 weeks
- State-specific background check process (method not fully specified) can add 1-2 weeks if manual review is required
New Hampshire does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
New Hampshire requires 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — New Hampshire may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $121.00 via New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification portal
- Renewal timing: Every 2 years based on date of issuance.
- Traveler tip: Track your New Hampshire license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
