Overview
Oregon is not an OT Compact member. Travelers must obtain an Oregon-specific license via endorsement; no multi-state reciprocity available. Plan 8-12 weeks for processing.
Endorsement Process
Oregon uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $280 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Oregon board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Oregon requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Oregon Occupational Therapy Licensing Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Oregon requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Oregon-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Oregon Occupational Therapy Licensing Board website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $280 |
| Renewal | $280 (every 2 years) |
| Fingerprinting | $12.50 paid directly to Fieldprint (fingerprint capture) + $50 OSP/FBI national background-check fee added to the licensure fee and passed through to Oregon State Police. |
Occupational Therapy Assistants: renewal is $160 (figures above are for occupational therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Oregon does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Oregon occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take Board issues the license within ~3 business days once ALL documentation is received; the real elapsed time is driven by gathering background-check results, verifications, and Law/Ethics exam completion. to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 5-7 business days.
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications sequentially rather than in batches; applications submitted mid-month may wait until next processing cycle
- NBCOT verification lookup requires applicant's certification number and exact name match; mismatches force manual board intervention and add 1-2 weeks
- Background check processing varies by Oregon state system capacity; delays spike during high-volume hiring seasons (spring/summer)
Oregon does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Oregon requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Oregon may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring by May 31st of even years — $280 via Oregon Occupational Therapy Licensing Board portal
- Late penalty: $50 late fee to reinstate a lapsed license (added to the standard renewal fee)
- Traveler tip: Track your Oregon license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
