Overview
Rhode Island has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Rhode Island begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Rhode Island-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Rhode Island IS a member of the OT Compact (enacted 2024) but has NOT yet implemented compact privileges. As of 2026 RI is not issuing or honoring OT compact privileges, so travelers cannot practice under compact privilege yet and must still obtain a Rhode Island license by endorsement. Compact privilege may become available in the future once RI's board completes implementation.
Endorsement Process
Rhode Island uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $140 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Rhode Island board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. Rhode Island requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice (within the RIDOH Division of Professional Regulation). Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Rhode Island requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Rhode Island-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice (within the RIDOH Division of Professional Regulation) website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Rhode Island does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Rhode Island occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-6 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3 weeks.
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes endorsement applications sequentially; no expedited track exists, so all applications queue behind prior submissions
- Criminal background check adds 2-3 weeks if any history requires board review; delayed results from state criminal databases push timeline past 6 weeks
- License verification from home state (via NBCOT or direct board request) may be slow if home state board operates on monthly review cycles or has staffing delays
Rhode Island does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Rhode Island requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Rhode Island may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring on even-numbered years by March 31st — $140
- Traveler tip: Track your Rhode Island license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
