Overview
South Carolina has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until South Carolina begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a South Carolina-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
South Carolina has ENACTED the OT Compact but is NOT YET issuing or accepting compact privileges. The official OT Compact Commission lists SC as 'Not Yet' accepting OTC applications. Travelers CANNOT practice in SC under a compact privilege today; they must obtain a SC license by endorsement/exam until SC goes live.
Endorsement Process
South Carolina uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $135 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via South Carolina board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT or direct board verification. South Carolina requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: South Carolina requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering South Carolina-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Board website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $135 |
| Renewal | $100 (every 2 years) |
Occupational Therapy Assistants: renewal is $80 (figures above are for occupational therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
South Carolina does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
South Carolina occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 3-5 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3 weeks.
Common sources of delay:
- Jurisprudence exam must be completed after all application materials are received; exam scheduling adds 1-2 weeks to timeline
- Background check fingerprinting submission errors are common; incomplete or poor-quality prints require resubmission
- SC Board processes applications in batches; missing any required document (passport photo, notarized application, fingerprints) pushes application to next review cycle
South Carolina does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
South Carolina requires 16 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: maintain certification with nbcot
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — South Carolina may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $100
- Renewal timing: Prior to March 15th.
- CE topics: maintain certification with NBCOT
- Late penalty: $50 late renewal fee (March 16 – April 15 of renewal year)
- Traveler tip: Track your South Carolina license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
