Overview
Washington DC is not an OT Compact member. Travel occupational therapists must obtain a DC-specific license through endorsement of current valid license. No temporary practice pathway exists, so permanent licensure must be completed before assignment start.
Endorsement Process
Washington D.C. uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $264 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Washington D.C. board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through NBCOT Certification Verification letter (ordered through MyNBCOT) PLUS official primary-source license verification from every state/jurisdiction ever held; official school transcript sent directly from the school.. Washington D.C. requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the DC Health - Board of Occupational Therapy. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Washington D.C. requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Washington D.C.-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the DC Health - Board of Occupational Therapy website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $264 |
| Renewal | $179 (every 2 years) |
| Fingerprinting | $50 Criminal Background Check (CBC) fee paid online with the application (waived if a fingerprint CBC is on file within the prior 2 years) |
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Washington D.C. does not issue temporary occupational therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Washington D.C. occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 2-8 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10 business days if complete application submitted with verified credentials from current state already on file.
Common sources of delay:
- Incomplete or missing documentation in initial submission — board processes applications in order received and incomplete applications are held until resubmitted
- Verification delays from current licensing state or NBCOT — DC board waits for official verification before advancing to board review
- Board review queue variability — while typical range is 2-8 weeks, peak submission periods can extend review timelines beyond the standard range
Washington D.C. does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Washington D.C. requires 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for occupational therapist license renewal.
- Occupational Therapy Assistants: 12 contact hours every 2 years (vs 24 for occupational therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Washington D.C. may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $179 via DC Health - Board of Occupational Therapy portal
- Renewal timing: Expires on the last day of the licensee's birth month (birth-month renewal cycle effective June 16, 2024; odd-birth-year => odd-year renewals, even-birth-year => even-year renewals).
- Traveler tip: Track your Washington D.C. license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
