Overview
Washington has joined the OT Compact, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Washington begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Washington-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Endorsement Process
Washington uses an online portal endorsement process for occupational therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $166 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Washington board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via NBCOT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through Out-of-state credential verification: applicant lists all states held; the originating jurisdiction completes and mails a verification form directly to DOH. (NBCOT verifies the certification/exam, not the state license.). Washington requires verification from every state where you hold or have held an occupational therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
A background check processed for every applicant; fingerprint-based WSP + FBI check obtained when required. is required as part of the endorsement process. Submit your fingerprinting authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Washington requires a mandatory Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Washington-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Washington Occupational Therapy Board website for status updates on your application.

Temporary License
Washington issues temporary occupational therapy licenses, allowing occupational therapists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.

- Current active OT license in good standing from source state
- No disciplinary history or ongoing investigations

- Application contains material false statements or omissions
- Applicant does not hold active, valid OT license in originating state
Important for travelers: Temporary license automatically expires upon final board decision (issuance of permanent license or formal denial). Violation of Washington Occupational Therapy Practice Act during temp license period can trigger immediate revocation. Failure to progress permanent application (e.g., not completing required jurisprudence exam) may result in temp license expiration without conversion.

Washington occupational therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3-4 weeks with compact privilege or 5-6 weeks for endorsement with completed jurisprudence exam submitted same day.
