Overview
Arizona participates in the PT Compact. Travelers holding an active multistate license from another compact member state can practice immediately in Arizona under compact privilege without obtaining a separate state license. Non-compact travelers must complete endorsement (4-12 weeks) and pass Arizona jurisprudence exam before licensure.
For travelers, this means you can begin an Arizona assignment immediately if your home state is also a PT Compact member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish Arizona residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for an Arizona license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
Arizona uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for physical therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $260 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via FSBPT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete fingerprinting and background check (can run concurrently)
- Pass state jurisprudence examination (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through FSBPT or direct board verification. Arizona requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a physical therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Arizona Board of Physical Therapy. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Arizona requires a mandatory Physical Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Arizona-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Arizona Board of Physical Therapy website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $260 |
| Renewal | $160 (every 2 years) |
Physical Therapist Assistants: renewal is $55 (figures above are for physical therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Arizona does not issue temporary physical therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Arizona physical therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 4 weeks (expedited scenario: fingerprinting completed within 1 week, jurisprudence exam passed immediately, background check cleared in 1 week, board approval in 1-2 weeks).
Common sources of delay:
- Jurisprudence exam must be completed before board review; exam scheduling delays directly extend total timeline
- Mail-based application submission creates 1-2 week postal delays before processing begins
- Fingerprint-based background check can take 2-4 weeks depending on state criminal records system responsiveness
- Board review and license issuance only occurs after all steps complete; no concurrent final approval available
Arizona does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Arizona requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for physical therapist license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: jurisprudence — 3 hours (initial, 1 hour per renewal)
- Physical Therapist Assistants: 10 contact hours every 2 years (vs 20 for physical therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Arizona may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $160 via Arizona Board of Physical Therapy portal
- Renewal timing: Based on individual license issue date.
- CE topics: jurisprudence — 3 hours (initial, 1 hour per renewal)
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: license becomes expired, and must reinstate and meet current requirements
- Traveler tip: Track your Arizona license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
