Overview
New Mexico is NOT a Physical Therapy Compact member. Licensure requires endorsement from your current state license or exam passage. No reciprocal recognition pathway exists; applicants must submit a formal endorsement application by mail, request verification through FSBPT, and pass New Mexico's jurisprudence exam before the board will issue a license.
Endorsement Process
New Mexico uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for physical therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $250 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via FSBPT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Pass state jurisprudence examination (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through FSBPT or direct board verification. New Mexico requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a physical therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the New Mexico Physical Therapy Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: New Mexico requires a mandatory Physical Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering New Mexico-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the New Mexico Physical Therapy Board website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $250 |
| Renewal | $160 (every 2 years) |
Physical Therapist Assistants: renewal is $120 (figures above are for physical therapists).
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
New Mexico does not issue temporary physical therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
New Mexico physical therapist endorsement applications typically take 1-4 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10-14 business days if application is complete, verification returns immediately, jurisprudence exam is passed on first attempt, and board processes without delays.
Common sources of delay:
- Board review step (step 4) cannot run concurrently; applications must complete steps 1-3 before board consideration, creating a sequential bottleneck
- Jurisprudence exam scheduling delays if applicant is unfamiliar with exam registration process or if exam slots fill quickly
- Mail-based application submission creates inherent delays compared to online portals; lost mail or incomplete submissions require resubmission cycles
New Mexico does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
New Mexico requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for physical therapist license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: ethics — 2 hours per cycle, jurisprudence — 2 hours per cycle
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — New Mexico may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring December 31 of even years — $160 via New Mexico Physical Therapy Board portal
- CE topics: ethics — 2 hours per cycle and jurisprudence — 2 hours per cycle
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: license becomes inactive, and must pay late fee and reinstate
- Traveler tip: Track your New Mexico license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
