Overview
Oklahoma is a PT Compact member. Travel PTs holding an active multistate compact license from another compact member state can practice immediately in Oklahoma without obtaining a separate state license. Non-compact PTs or those without active multistate privilege must complete endorsement (4-12 weeks typical).
For travelers, this means you can begin an Oklahoma assignment immediately if your home state is also a PT Compact member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish Oklahoma residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for an Oklahoma license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
Oklahoma uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for physical therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $150 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via FSBPT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Pass state jurisprudence examination (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through FSBPT or direct board verification. Oklahoma requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a physical therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Oklahoma requires a mandatory Physical Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Oklahoma-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Oklahoma does not issue temporary physical therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Oklahoma physical therapist endorsement applications typically take 4-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 4 weeks (if application received immediately before committee meeting and expedited board processing occurs).
Common sources of delay:
- Physical Therapy Committee meets only 3 times per year; applications must be filed at least 30 days before a committee meeting or they roll to the next quarter
- Board review cycle adds 4-6 weeks after committee approval before final license issuance
- Mail-based application submission creates variable lag time depending on postal delivery and board receipt processing
Oklahoma does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Oklahoma requires 40 contact hours of continuing education every 1 year for physical therapist license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: physical therapy ethics
- Physical Therapist Assistants: 30 contact hours every 1 year (vs 40 for physical therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Oklahoma may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every year, expiring June 30 of even years — $150 via Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure portal
- CE topics: physical therapy ethics
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: license becomes inactive, and must pay late fee and reinstate
- Traveler tip: Track your Oklahoma license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
