Overview
California is not a member of the ASLP-IC (ASLP Interstate Compact). SLPs must obtain a California-specific license through endorsement from another state or by examination. No multistate reciprocity or compact privileges available.
Endorsement Process
California uses a downloadable license application package (pdf/paper); the 'apply simply' online path does not cover the out-of-state endorsement option endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $150 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via California board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through ASHA or direct board verification. California requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
A fingerprint-based background check required (Live Scan / fingerprint cards; 'see application' for specifics) is required as part of the endorsement process. Submit your fingerprinting authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: California requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering California-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
California issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses valid for 6 months, allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Complete endorsement application submitted to California board
- No disqualifying findings in initial background check review
- Current active license in good standing from another state
Issuance timeline:
- Complete application received with all required documentation
- Background check initiated and no disqualifying flags identified
- Board approval (typically within 2-4 weeks of complete application)
Denial risks:
- Applicant does not hold an active, valid license in another state
- Criminal conviction or disciplinary history that renders applicant unsafe to practice unprotected
- Failure to provide complete or accurate background information
Important for travelers: Temporary license is automatically revoked upon final license decision (either issuance or denial of permanent license). If permanent license is denied, temporary license expires immediately and candidate cannot continue working. Temporary license does not extend beyond 6 months; if permanent license processing exceeds 6 months, temporary expires and candidate must stop work until permanent license issued.
Processing Time
California speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 6-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 5-6 weeks if application is complete on first submission, verification returns within 1 week, and background check clears immediately.
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications in order received; no expedited track; 6-12 week typical range means late submissions risk 12-week delays
- Verification delays from ASHA or current state board can extend timeline by 2-3 weeks if verifying state is slow or ASHA records incomplete
- Background check requirements are state-specific and not pre-defined; missing or incomplete fingerprinting/background submission causes application to stall until board provides clarification
- Board meets monthly; applications submitted after cutoff or missing documentation may wait until next board review cycle
California does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
California requires 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for speech-language pathologist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — California may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $150 via Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board portal
- Renewal timing: Expiring on the last date of the license holder's birth month.
- Traveler tip: Track your California license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
