Oklahoma Speech-Language Pathologist Licensing Guide

Oklahoma issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses, allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.

Eligibility requirements:

• Hold active, current license from another US state or compact member
• Have completed ASHA certification or equivalent credential meeting Oklahoma standard
• Pass state-specific background check (if required by OBESPA at time of application)

Issuance timeline:

• Complete endorsement application submitted via OBESPA portal
• Verification of current license in good standing received from prior state or ASHA
• Background check (if required) cleared or waived

Denial risks:

• Background check reveals disqualifying criminal history or disciplinary findings
• License verification from prior state reveals disciplinary action, revocation, or suspended status
• Applicant does not hold active license in good standing from another state at time of temporary license request

Important for travelers: Temporary license automatically expires when permanent license is issued or upon denial — no continuation after 10 calendar day denial window. If permanent endorsement is denied, temporary license is revoked immediately upon written denial notice. Working outside approved settings or scope of practice while on temporary license can trigger immediate revocation and board investigation.
