Overview
Tennessee has joined the ASLP-IC, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Tennessee begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Tennessee-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Tennessee has enacted ASLP-IC legislation and is one of 37 member jurisdictions, but the compact is NOT yet operational in Tennessee. As of early 2026, only Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are issuing compact privileges via CompactConnect. SLPs must complete full state licensure (endorsement or by exam) to practice in Tennessee until the state onboards licensees to CompactConnect.
Endorsement Process
Tennessee uses an online portal endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $160 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Tennessee board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through ASHA or direct board verification. Tennessee requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Tennessee Board for Communication Disorders and Sciences. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Tennessee requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering Tennessee-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Tennessee Board for Communication Disorders and Sciences website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Tennessee issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses, allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP) or active speech-language pathology license from another state
- Complete initial application submitted to Tennessee board portal
- No felony convictions or active disciplinary actions in any state
Issuance timeline:
- Complete application received by Tennessee board portal
- Background check initiated and cleared (no disqualifying findings)
- Applicant meets ASHA or equivalent state licensure requirements
Denial risks:
- Incomplete application (missing verification request or required documentation)
- Pending or unresolved disciplinary action in current or prior state
- Failure to pass Tennessee-specific background check
Important for travelers: Temp license automatically expires if permanent license is denied; reapplication required for new temp license. Temp license is revoked immediately if board learns of undisclosed prior discipline or false statements in application. Practicing outside scope of temporary license terms (e.g., in settings not approved by board) can trigger immediate revocation.
Processing Time
Tennessee speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 6-12 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3 weeks (compact privilege only; no state-specific licensing needed).
Common sources of delay:
- Tennessee Board of Communication and Hearing Sciences meets only 4 times per year; applications submitted after the monthly cutoff wait until the next scheduled meeting for ratification
- Background check processing through Tennessee's state-specific system can add 2-4 weeks if discrepancies require clarification
- License verification delays from applicant's current state (especially non-ASHA Clearinghouse states) can extend timeline by 3-6 weeks
Tennessee does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Tennessee requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for speech-language pathologist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Tennessee may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $60
- Renewal timing: From date of issuance.
- Traveler tip: Track your Tennessee license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
