Overview
Virginia has joined the ASLP-IC, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Virginia begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Virginia-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Virginia has enacted ASLP-IC legislation but is NOT yet issuing or accepting compact privileges. As of early 2026, only Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are operational on CompactConnect. Virginia SLP travelers must obtain a Virginia license by endorsement (or full application); compact privilege is not an available pathway in Virginia at this time.
Endorsement Process
Virginia uses an online portal endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $135 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Virginia board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through ASHA or direct board verification. Virginia requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Virginia Speech-Language Pathology Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Virginia requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering Virginia-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Virginia Speech-Language Pathology Board website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Virginia issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses, allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Endorsement application must be complete and pending board review
- Applicant must hold valid, unrestricted license in another U.S. state or compact privilege
- No pending disciplinary actions or background check flags
Issuance timeline:
- Complete endorsement application received via Virginia portal
- Initial background check clears (state-level screening)
- License verification request submitted to prior state
Denial risks:
- Any felony conviction or healthcare-related misdemeanor within past 10 years
- Disciplinary history (suspension, revocation, probation) in any state
- Background check reveals disqualifying criminal history
Important for travelers: Temp license revokes automatically if permanent license is denied upon board review. Revocation occurs immediately if applicant fails to transition to permanent license within 90-day window. Any new criminal charge or disciplinary action in another state during temp license period triggers automatic revocation.
Processing Time
Virginia speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 21 business days to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 14 business days (if compact privilege eligibility confirmed and all documents pre-submitted).
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications in batches; applications submitted after monthly cutoff wait 4-6 weeks for next review cycle
- Background check processing varies by Virginia state bureau timing; delays common if fingerprints require resubmission
- License verification from compact member states via ASHA can add 1-2 weeks if ASHA verification queue is slow
Virginia does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Virginia requires 10 contact hours of continuing education every 1 year for speech-language pathologist license renewal.
- First renewal: New licensees may qualify for reduced CE requirements during their first renewal cycle
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Virginia may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every year, expiring by June 30 each year (lapse begins July 1; one-year late-renewal window with $25 late fee, then reinstatement required) — $75
- Late penalty: $25 late fee, and lapsed license may be renewed within one year of expiration with renewal fee + late fee + CE attestation
- Traveler tip: Track your Virginia license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
