Overview
West Virginia is one of only 3 ASLP-IC member states (with Louisiana and Ohio) actually issuing compact privileges as of 2026. Practitioners holding an unencumbered home-state license in a member state that has launched on CompactConnect may register at app.compactconnect.org/Dashboard. Board requires applicants to contact the office BEFORE applying for compact privilege ('PLEASE CONTACT BOARD OFFICE BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR THE COMPACT'). Other applicants must apply under §29-1-3 (no separate endorsement track exists).
For travelers, this means you can begin a West Virginia assignment immediately if your home state is also an ASLP-IC member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish West Virginia residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for a West Virginia license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
West Virginia uses an online portal endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $300 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via West Virginia board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through ASHA or direct board verification. West Virginia requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the West Virginia Speech-Language Pathology Board. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: West Virginia requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering West Virginia-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the West Virginia Speech-Language Pathology Board website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
West Virginia does not issue temporary speech-language pathology licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
West Virginia speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 1-2 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 1 week (jurisprudence exam completed immediately, license verification received within 3 days, board processes application in next batch).
Common sources of delay:
- Jurisprudence exam must be completed before board can issue license; exam scheduling availability may delay processing by 1-3 weeks
- Board processes endorsements in batches; applications submitted mid-month may wait until next review cycle (2-3 weeks)
- License verification from current state (ASHA or direct board request) can take 1-2 weeks; delays in verification workflow hold up board review
West Virginia does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
West Virginia requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for speech-language pathologist license renewal.
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — West Virginia may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $175
- Renewal timing: Prior to December 31st of even numbered years.
- Late penalty: $75 late fee within one year of expiration, and $100 reinstatement fee if lapsed >1 year and <5 years
- Traveler tip: Track your West Virginia license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
