Overview
Wisconsin has joined the ASLP-IC, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Wisconsin begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain a Wisconsin-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Wisconsin has enacted ASLP-IC legislation and is one of 36 member states, but the compact is not yet operational for Wisconsin. As of early 2026, the ASLP-IC Commission is only issuing compact privileges for licensees of Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. Wisconsin licensees cannot currently obtain compact privilege, and SLPs from other compact states cannot use compact privilege to practice in Wisconsin. All travelers must obtain a Wisconsin license by endorsement until WI is operationalized in CompactConnect.
Endorsement Process
Wisconsin uses an online portal endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $60 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Wisconsin board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through ASHA or direct board verification. Wisconsin requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Hearing and Speech Examining Board (Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services). Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Wisconsin requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering Wisconsin-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Hearing and Speech Examining Board (Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services) website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Wisconsin issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses valid for Up to 18 months, renewable once for an additional 18 months at board discretion, allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Processing Time
Wisconsin speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 1-2 weeks (peak periods may extend to 8-12 weeks) to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 5-7 days if verification letters are already in hand and application is complete on first submission.
Common sources of delay:
- Verification letters must come directly from each prior state board (not ASHA portal); if a traveler has been licensed in multiple states, collecting all letters can add 2-4 weeks
- Wisconsin board does not appear to have a published processing timeline or expedited track; standard review during peak periods (summer) can extend from 1-2 weeks to 8-12 weeks
- No clear jurisprudence exam or state-specific exam requirement documented, but missing state-specific requirements field suggests applicants may face surprise requests for additional documentation mid-application
Wisconsin does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Wisconsin requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for speech-language pathologist license renewal.
- First renewal: New licensees may qualify for reduced CE requirements during their first renewal cycle
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Wisconsin may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years — $75
- Renewal timing: Biennium runs 2/1/odd – 1/31/odd, so license expires January 31 of each odd-numbered year.
- Traveler tip: Track your Wisconsin license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
