Overview
Indiana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Nurses with multistate licenses from compact states and current primary state of residence can practice immediately in Indiana without applying for an Indiana-issued license, provided compact status remains active and home state license stays in good standing.
For travelers, this means you can begin an Indiana assignment immediately if your home state is also a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish Indiana residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for an Indiana license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
Indiana uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for registered nurses already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $50 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via Nursys or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through Nursys or direct board verification. Indiana requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a registered nurse license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency - Indiana State Board of Nursing. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency - Indiana State Board of Nursing website for status updates on your application.
Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Endorsement Application | $50 |
| Renewal | $50 (every 2 years) |
| Fingerprinting | $25-75 (fingerprinting) |
| Nursys verification | $30 |
| Estimated First-Time Cost | $105–$155 |
Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Indiana issues temporary nursing licenses valid for 90 days, allowing registered nurses to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must have submitted a complete endorsement application to Indiana board
- Must hold active RN license in good standing from another U.S. state
Issuance timeline:
- Complete endorsement application received and accepted by board
- Applicant requests temporary license explicitly in application or portal submission
- Background check via self-reported criminal history is cleared
Denial risks:
- Criminal history that would disqualify permanent endorsement
- Application deemed incomplete after initial review
- Applicant does not hold active license in originating state
Important for travelers: Temporary license automatically expires at 90-day mark regardless of permanent license status; no extension possible under IC 25-23-1-10.5. If disciplinary action occurs during temporary license period, revocation is immediate. If applicant's home state license lapses or is suspended, temporary license in Indiana is revoked immediately. Working beyond the 90-day expiration date creates unlicensed practice violation.
Processing Time
Indiana registered nurse endorsement applications typically take 3-8 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 10-14 days if temporary license route is used and applicant is compact-eligible, allowing immediate start while permanent processes.
Common sources of delay:
- Verification requests sent to original licensing state via Nursys or direct board contact can add 2-4 weeks if that state has slow turnaround
- Application must be submitted by mail or PDF; no expedited online submission means manual processing queue delays
- Board review in step 3 is non-concurrent; applications queue for board meeting review which may not occur immediately upon receipt
Indiana does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Indiana does not require continuing education hours for registered nurse license renewal.
- Practice hour model: Must answer disclosure questions at renewal — no CE or practice hours required
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Indiana may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring October 31 of odd years — $50 via Indiana Professional Licensing Agency portal
- CE requirement: No mandatory continuing education hours — must answer disclosure questions at renewal — no CE or practice hours required
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: License becomes expired, and must pay late fee to renew
- Traveler tip: Track your Indiana license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
