Overview
Arkansas is a PT Compact member state. Licensees holding an active multistate PT Compact license from any other compact member state may practice immediately in Arkansas under interstate compact privilege without obtaining a separate Arkansas license or passing additional exams. Non-compact reciprocal licensees must complete standard endorsement workflow including jurisprudence exam.
For travelers, this means you can begin an Arkansas assignment immediately if your home state is also a PT Compact member and your license is set to multistate status. However, if you establish Arkansas residency during your assignment, your compact privilege becomes invalid and you must apply for an Arkansas license through endorsement.
Endorsement Process
Arkansas uses a mail/pdf application endorsement process for physical therapists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $3 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application by mail
- Request license verification from current state (via FSBPT or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Pass state jurisprudence examination (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through FSBPT or direct board verification. Arkansas requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a physical therapist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Arkansas requires a mandatory Physical Therapy Jurisprudence Examination covering Arkansas-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Arkansas does not issue temporary physical therapy licenses. Your permanent license must be fully issued before you can begin working on assignment. Travelers should plan their start dates accordingly and allow the full processing window before their expected first day.
Processing Time
Arkansas physical therapist endorsement applications typically take 2-6 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 3-4 weeks (if exam scheduled immediately upon application receipt, verification obtained within 1 week, and board meets within 2 weeks of complete submission).
Common sources of delay:
- Jurisprudence exam scheduling: Arkansas requires a state-specific jurisprudence exam that must be passed before board review; exam scheduling availability may delay issuance by 1-2 weeks
- Mail-based application submission: Paper applications cannot be expedited and depend on postal processing and manual board receipt; no electronic submission option available
- Board review cycle: Non-compact applications require formal board review which may occur on a fixed meeting schedule, causing 2-4 week delays if application arrives between meeting dates
- License verification delays from home state: FSBPT or direct board verification requests can take 1-2 weeks, especially if home state board is understaffed
Arkansas does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
Continuing Education
Arkansas requires 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years for physical therapist license renewal.
- Mandatory topics: ethics and jurisprudence — 2 hours per cycle
- Physical Therapist Assistants: 10 contact hours every 2 years (vs 20 for physical therapists)
- Traveler tip: Keep all CE documentation organized and easily accessible — Arkansas may audit compliance at any time
Renewal Process
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expiring March 1 — $4 via Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy portal
- CE topics: ethics and jurisprudence — 2 hours per cycle
- Renewal window: Opens 60 days before expiration
- Late penalty: license becomes lapsed, and must pay late fee to reinstate
- Traveler tip: Track your Arkansas license expiration date carefully — a lapsed license can disrupt active assignments
