Overview
Iowa has joined the ASLP-IC, but the state is not yet issuing or honoring compact privileges. Until Iowa begins processing privileges, travelers must obtain an Iowa-specific license through the endorsement process before practicing here.
Iowa has enacted ASLP-IC legislation and is a member state, but is NOT yet issuing compact privileges. As of early 2026 only Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are operational/issuing. Travelers cannot practice in Iowa under compact privilege yet and must obtain an Iowa license (by endorsement or temporary license).
Endorsement Process
Iowa uses an online portal endorsement process for speech-language pathologists already licensed in another state. You'll need to submit your completed application along with supporting documents and the $120 application fee.
- Submit endorsement application via Iowa board portal
- Request license verification from current state (via ASHA or direct) (can run concurrently)
- Complete any state-specific requirements (jurisprudence exam, background check, etc.) (can run concurrently)
- Await board review and license issuance
License verification is handled through Official license verification from each state of prior licensure (printable from the other board's website if it includes all required fields, otherwise sent directly from the licensing board). Minimum 5 years as an independent licensee required. ASHA clearinghouse is not referenced by the board.. Iowa requires verification from every state where you hold or have held a speech-language pathologist license, so request verification early to avoid delays.
Background check requirements vary by applicant — confirm the current fingerprinting and screening steps with the Iowa Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Where fingerprinting applies, submit your authorization as early as possible, since background check processing is one of the most common sources of delay.
Jurisprudence Exam Required: Iowa requires a mandatory Speech-Language Pathology Jurisprudence Examination covering Iowa-specific law. This cannot be waived regardless of your experience level or compact status. Schedule this early — no license (temporary or permanent) will issue until you've passed it.
After all components are received, the Board reviews applications on a rolling basis. Check the Iowa Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology website for status updates on your application.

Travelers should factor these licensing costs into their assignment budgeting. Many staffing agencies, including Fusion Medical Staffing, offer licensure reimbursement programs to help offset these expenses.
Temporary License
Iowa issues temporary speech-language pathology licenses valid for Not stated on board page; research's '3 months / 3-month validity' claim is unverified. Verify against IAC 481-740., allowing speech-language pathologists to begin practicing while their permanent endorsement application is being processed. For travelers, this is often the fastest path to starting an assignment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Hold an active, unrestricted license from another state or compact member jurisdiction
- Submit letter stating legitimate need for temporary practice privilege (e.g., assignment already initiated or imminent start date)
- Provide evidence of substantially equivalent qualifications to Iowa licensure standards (degree, certification, exam passage)
- Have active ASHA certification (CFY or CCC-SLP) or equivalent
Issuance timeline:
- Complete temporary license application submitted via board portal
- Supporting documentation (verification letter, proof of current license, educational credentials) received and deemed acceptable
- Stated need for temporary practice privilege documented and approved by board staff
Denial risks:
- Evidence of disciplinary action, complaints, or restrictions on current/previous license
- Substantial qualifications deficit compared to Iowa requirements (e.g., missing degree, no ASHA certification)
- No documented legitimate need for temporary practice privilege
- Incomplete or fraudulent documentation submitted with application
Important for travelers: Temporary license is automatically revoked upon issuance of permanent license; applicant must not continue using temp privilege after permanent license effective date. Revocation occurs immediately if permanent license application is denied or withdrawn. Board may revoke if practitioner works outside scope of practice or violates Iowa rules during temp period; violations are rare but create permanent record issues.
Processing Time
Iowa speech-language pathologist endorsement applications typically take 3-4 weeks to process. The timeline is subject to moderate variability depending on the completeness of your application and external factors.
In the best-case scenario, processing can be as fast as 2 weeks (if application complete, verification expedited, and no background check complications).
Common sources of delay:
- Board processes applications in batches; applications submitted after mid-month cutoff may wait an additional 2-3 weeks for next batch review
- Verification requests to ASHA or applicant's current state board can add 1-2 weeks if slow to respond; direct board verification is faster but not always available
- Background check completion depends on state-specific requirements not clearly documented; delays occur when board requests additional documentation or clarification
Iowa does not offer an expedited processing track. The best way to minimize your wait time is to ensure all application components — fingerprints, verification, and any required exams — are completed before or immediately after submitting your application.
