Question 1

How much experience do I need for travel First Assist Tech jobs?

Accepted Answer

Most travel First Assist Tech positions require two years of recent experience. This typically includes scrub experience combined with first assist work in the relevant specialty. Facilities often prefer candidates with exposure to diverse patient populations and multiple facility types, as this demonstrates adaptability and comprehensive skill development. Requirements vary significantly by facility and geographic location, with some assignments accepting less experience for less complex cases while others require extensive background in specialized procedures. Your recruiter can help identify assignments that align with your current experience level and career goals, ensuring you're matched with opportunities where you'll be confident and successful from day one.

Question 2

What certifications do I need for travel First Assist Tech positions?

Accepted Answer

Travel First Assist Tech positions typically require CST certification and current BLS certification. CSFA certification from NBSTSA is commonly preferred for first assist roles. These certifications demonstrate competency in surgical technology and first assisting procedures, which most facilities require before placement. Requirements vary by facility and state, so your Fusion recruiter will review the specific credentials needed for each assignment. Some facilities may accept equivalent certifications or require additional credentials like ACLS depending on the surgical specialty and facility protocols. Your recruiter can help you understand which certifications will maximize your placement opportunities and guide you through any additional requirements for assignments you're interested in pursuing.

Question 3

How long are travel First Assist Tech assignments?

Accepted Answer

Travel First Assist Tech assignments typically run 13 weeks. This is the standard contract length across travel healthcare positions. Extensions beyond the initial 13 weeks are common when both the healthcare professional and facility agree to continue the assignment, and some facilities may offer shorter contract durations based on specific staffing needs. Your recruiter can help identify assignments that align with your preferred timeline and career goals, whether you're looking for a standard 13-week contract, a shorter commitment, or an opportunity with strong extension potential in a location you'd like to explore long-term.
