Travel NICU RN Jobs in Ohio

Most travel NICU RN positions require at least 2 years of recent bedside experience. Facilities typically prefer experience in Level III or higher NICUs, though requirements vary by assignment. Some positions may accept Level II experience depending on facility needs and acuity. First-time travelers often find success starting with assignments at NICU levels similar to their staff experience, which helps ensure a smoother transition into travel nursing. Your recruiter will review your specific background, including the NICU levels you've worked and patient populations you've cared for, to help match you with assignments that align with your experience and comfort level while meeting facility requirements.

RNC-NIC or CCRN-Neonatal certification is not always required for travel NICU positions. Most facilities require current BLS and NRP certification as baseline credentials. RNC-NIC certification is highly valued by employers and strengthens candidacy for competitive assignments, particularly at Level III and IV NICUs. Some facilities may prefer or require specialty certification depending on their patient acuity and unit protocols. Your recruiter can discuss which certifications align with your career goals and will open the most opportunities based on current market demand and facility preferences in your target locations.

Travel NICU nurses receive housing through furnished apartments or monthly stipends. Housing arrangements are typically finalized before the assignment start date and vary based on location and facility contract terms. Stipend amounts depend on the assignment's geographic area and current housing market rates. Your recruiter coordinates all housing logistics, connecting you with furnished options or processing stipend payments according to your preference and assignment details. If housing issues arise during your assignment—whether maintenance concerns, lease complications, or unexpected changes—your recruiter advocates on your behalf to resolve them quickly. This support ensures you can maintain focus on patient care rather than accommodation logistics throughout your 13-week contract.

Travel NICU RN pay varies by facility level, location, and market demand. Level IV NICUs typically offer higher compensation than Level II or III facilities due to the complexity of cases and specialized skills required. NICU nursing ranks among the higher-paying travel nursing specialties because of the advanced neonatal critical care expertise needed. Geographic location significantly impacts pay rates, with urban areas and states experiencing nursing shortages often providing more competitive packages. Your recruiter will present detailed compensation information including base pay, housing assistance, and day-one health insurance benefits to help you evaluate the total value of each assignment opportunity.

Travel NICU RN positions require an active RN license, BLS certification, and typically NICU experience. Most assignments begin with credential verification, reference checks, and facility-specific orientation requirements. Your recruiter will guide you through licensing verification across state lines, match you with positions aligned to your preferences, and coordinate housing and travel logistics. This partnership lets you focus on clinical excellence while administrative details are managed, ensuring a smooth transition into your travel assignment.

Level III NICUs provide specialized care for critically ill newborns with limited surgical capability. Level IV NICUs are regional referral centers offering comprehensive surgical services and advanced interventions like ECMO. Level IV units typically handle the most complex cases requiring subspecialty care and serve as referral centers for surrounding facilities. Your choice depends on your experience level and career goals—many travel nurses prefer Level IV assignments for advanced skill development and exposure to complex cases, while others seek Level III positions for a different patient population mix or to build confidence before advancing to higher-acuity environments.

Yes. One of the best parts of travel nursing is flexibility between assignments. You can take a break to recharge, spend time with family, or explore a new location before your next assignment. Your recruiter helps you plan timing and finds your next opportunity when you're ready.

NICU travel assignments typically last 13 weeks with defined end dates. Recruiters assess assignments before placement by evaluating nurse-to-patient ratios, unit management structure, and facility culture. If issues arise during an assignment, your recruiter serves as your advocate with the facility. They work to address concerns about staffing, working conditions, or assignment expectations. Since every contract has a clear endpoint, you have the flexibility to transition to a new opportunity if the current placement isn't meeting your professional needs. Your recruiter will help identify your next assignment based on what you're looking for in unit culture, location, and clinical environment.
