Question 1

What experience do I need to become a travel PICU RN?

Accepted Answer

Most travel PICU positions require a minimum of 2 years of dedicated PICU bedside experience. You'll need comfort with pediatric assessment across the developmental spectrum, from infants through adolescents, and familiarity with weight-based medication administration and pediatric ventilator management. Your recruiter can help identify assignments that match your experience level and help you build toward more specialized placements.

Question 2

Is CCRN-Pediatric certification required for travel PICU nursing?

Accepted Answer

CCRN-Pediatric certification is not required for travel PICU nursing positions. However, it is highly valued by employers and significantly strengthens competitiveness for assignments. The certification demonstrates validated pediatric critical care expertise through examination and can open doors to premier children's hospitals and specialized PICU placements nationwide. Many travel PICU nurses pursue CCRN-Pediatric certification early in their careers to enhance their marketability and access to top-tier facilities. Your recruiter can discuss how obtaining this certification might align with your professional goals and help you secure preferred assignments at leading pediatric critical care units.

Question 3

What certifications do I need for a travel PICU assignment?

Accepted Answer

You'll need current BLS and PALS certifications, which are required by virtually all PICU facilities. An active RN license in your assignment state is also essential. CCRN-Pediatric is preferred but not always required. Some facilities may ask about ACLS or trauma certifications depending on their patient population. Your recruiter will clarify all certification requirements before you accept an assignment.

Question 4

How does housing and logistics work for travel PICU nurses?

Accepted Answer

Travel PICU nurses typically receive housing assistance or stipends as part of their compensation package. Staffing agencies coordinate credentialing, state licensing verification, and facility-specific requirements before assignment start dates. Most agencies assign a dedicated recruiter to manage logistics including housing arrangements, travel reimbursement, and compliance documentation throughout the contract period. Your recruiter serves as your primary point of contact for resolving housing issues, credential delays, or assignment changes. This support structure allows you to focus on clinical responsibilities while administrative details are handled on your behalf. If challenges arise during your assignment, your recruiter works directly with the facility and housing providers to find solutions quickly.

Question 5

What is the pay like for travel PICU nurses?

Accepted Answer

PICU travel nursing offers competitive compensation reflecting specialized pediatric critical care expertise. Pay varies by facility type, geographic location, and current demand for pediatric intensive care nurses. Assignments typically include comprehensive benefits such as health insurance from day one and housing assistance. Your recruiter can discuss specific pay packages for different assignments and help you compare opportunities based on location, facility needs, and your experience level. PICU nurses often see higher compensation in areas with critical shortages of pediatric intensive care specialists or in facilities requiring advanced certifications like PALS and pediatric advanced life support training.

Question 6

How do I get started as a travel PICU RN?

Accepted Answer

Travel PICU RN positions require an active RN license, BLS certification, and typically PICU experience. Most facilities prefer ACLS certification as well. The application process involves submitting your credentials, certifications, and assignment preferences to a recruiter, who reviews opportunities matching your experience and goals. Your recruiter answers questions about travel logistics, facility requirements, and assignment details throughout the process. There's no pressure to commit on a timeline—you can explore options at your own pace and connect with your recruiter whenever you're ready to move forward with an assignment.

Question 7

Can I take time off between PICU travel assignments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of travel nursing is control over your schedule. You can take time between assignments to recharge, spend time with family, or explore a new city. This flexibility is especially important in pediatric critical care, where the emotional weight of caring for critically ill children can lead to compassion fatigue. Your recruiter supports whatever pace works for you.

Question 8

What if my first travel PICU assignment doesn't work out?

Accepted Answer

Travel PICU assignments are 13-week contracts. If an assignment doesn't meet expectations, travelers can discuss concerns with their recruiter, request facility intervention, or complete the contract and choose a different placement next time. Most agencies vet assignments by asking facilities about nurse-to-patient ratios, unit management style, and workplace culture before presenting opportunities. This pre-screening helps travelers make informed decisions. If issues arise during an assignment, your recruiter can advocate on your behalf with the facility to address concerns or help identify solutions. Remember, every contract has a defined end date, and you're never locked into a situation long-term. Your recruiter works with you to ensure each experience aligns with your professional goals and preferences.
